Series Overview
Spintronics is a technology field that utilizes not only the electric charge of electrons but also their spin (quantum mechanical angular momentum) as information carriers. In 2007, Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR), bringing this field into the spotlight.
This series systematically covers everything from fundamental spin concepts to the physics of GMR and TMR effects, Python simulations, and practical devices such as MRAM and hard disk read heads.
Prerequisites
- Basic quantum mechanics (wave functions, spin angular momentum concepts)
- Fundamentals of electromagnetism (current, magnetic field, resistance)
- Basic Python programming (NumPy, Matplotlib)

Series Structure
Starting from the basics of electron spin, we explore the historical significance of the 1988 GMR discovery, differences from conventional electronics, and the innovations that spintronics brings.
Detailed explanations of the core physical phenomena in spintronics: spin-polarized currents, Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR), Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR), spin injection and accumulation, and the Spin Hall Effect.
Experience spin transport phenomena through practical Python code examples: numerical solutions of the spin diffusion equation, GMR/TMR characteristic simulations, and visualization of spin accumulation.
Introducing practical and research devices: hard disk read heads, MRAM (Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory), spin-orbit torque devices, spin transistors, and exploring connections with quantum computing.
